Care That Grows From Within
Autumn 2026 Partner Update
Building capacity. Investing in people. Expanding access. Health Uganda is helping Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital grow sustainable GI care through equipment, training, research, and direct support for patients and families.
Diagnostics
A new point-of-care Velacur system will allow 1,500–2,000 patients each year to be noninvasively screened and staged for liver disease, helping identify patients at risk for complications who need treatment.

Training
Dr. Paul has been accepted for formal gastroenterology training in Hamilton, Ontario. His return will expand advanced GI and endoscopy care at MRRH and help lay the groundwork for future locally led GI training in Uganda.

Nutrition
HUG closed a major funding gap to provide a full year of nutritional assistance, reaching approximately 1,000 newborns, 600 children with malnutrition, and 500 children undergoing inpatient cancer treatment.

Education
The G. Ralph Corey CME Grant supported Dr. Akidi Cynthia’s participation in the 2026 Conference on Liver Disease in Africa in Addis Ababa, helping build local expertise and connections among GI-focused clinicians across East Africa.
